that obama -- that romney needed going into this, you know, with just a couple weeks away? >> it's very much the narrative he needed, because his campaign was about to be blown away. president obama generally has been running a much better campaign than mitt romney has, but in the last week or so, the mitt romney campaign i think is getting its act together. he had a very, very good debate, obviously. he was more personal on the stump, he was in florida the last few days, he was willing to talk in an emotionally connective way. he gave a foreign policy speech today that was -- had a lot of vagueness in it but was by far and way the best foreign policy speech in my judgment he's made, the most comprehensive on the middle east. he's finding his voice, finding solidity but the polls are really hard to understand right now. not only this pew poll but we had one of the strangest days in polling in gallup i have ever seen. this morning they put out a tracking poll that said the race was tied. this afternoon they put out a second tracking poll saying obama had a five point lead. what can you make o

more than barack obama in the last five weeks of the campaign. get over it, yes, you may like barack obama more than me but he hasn't done the job. >> richard says barack obama needs to play it safe. you say, mitt romney, don't play it nice. that's an interesting summation of the debate strategies. i want to talk about vice president biden, a favorite subject for both of you. >> america loves joe biden. >> i love joe biden. he said something on the campaign trail something yesterday and the republicans were quick to pounce. let's listen to what he said. >> this is deadly earnest. how they can justify, how they can justify, raising attacks on the middle class has been buried the last four years. how in lord's name can they justify raising their taxes with these tax cuts? >> and this is how paul ryan responded. >> i thought he was taking my speech. you know what? we agree. the middle class has been buried over the last four years. they're being buried by obama care, by borrowing, taxes, spending, more regulations, all this uncertainty plaguing businesses. the way to fix this is stop th

their debate performances over the past couple of weeks. president obama said that preparing for the debate was quote a drag. in the meantime, mitt romney says it's not about who wins or loses, it's about who -- well, he didn't say anything about a game. but he said, we have serious issues at play here. both men have been practicing for the debate. joining me now, the political professor, jason johnson and republican strategist thank you so much. for some reason i'm a little off kilter now, but i'm fine. jason, you know, i'm just wondering about this pennsylvania ruling. a judge ruled you don't have to show your i.d. before you vote in pennsylvania. of course, that's on appeal. but on the day of the election, you won't have to show your voter i.d. will that make a difference for democrats, let's say? >> that's going to be a huge difference for democrats. you had the republican head of the state senate saying that voter i.d. was going to hand pennsylvania to mitt romney. well, now the state is at play. so mitt romney has to compete fairly, there's not going to be any voter i.d. laws disenfra

of denver. there is president obama and mitt romney preparing to go face-to-face for 90 minutes with the presidency hanging in the balance. >> most americans head to the polls in five weeks. but by that time, an estimated 30% of the country will have already voted. >> early voting gets under way this morning in the battleground state of ohio, and the not so battleground state of nebraska. that means ballots are already being cast in ten states across the country. cnn political editor paul steinhauser is with us this morning. paul, more and more voters get a chance to go to the polls early. why is this so important? >> it is interesting, because what happens if a big development happens in this first debate or even some of the other debates and you've already cast your ballot and you want to change your mind. too late. most of the people who are voting early in these states are die-hards. ohio starting today. they're the second battleground state to start early. iowa, christine you know something about that. so it is interesting about a third of the country voted in one way, shap
